Roman forces have been dispatched with orders to halt the raiders at a ford nearby. A battle report will be posted in due course when messengers run from the battlefield.
His job is to project his patch from Arab raiders, the merchant chappies from the City State and the horse raiders from the Eastern wastes amongst others. The Dux has some skirmishers, light and heavy infantry to help him, not to mention very heavy cavalry. In the wall painting we see the Dux, his Draco bearer and finally his Gallic bodyguard.

The Libyans soon succumbed to the Egyptian chariots apart from these fellows in rough terrain and their general accompanied by his bodyguard.Their flank collapsed.

Meanwhile the sword armed Sea people came on and pushed the Egyptians back...

Eventually Pharaoh was harried off the table as his men failed to stem the Sea people tide. The Egyptians tried vainly to get heir right flank across to the left. A draw was agreed upon and the game ended with a handshake. It was fun,not quite as expected but a very close run thing.

I have succumbed (it being my birthday) to some Lamming New Kingdom Egyptians and chariots this morning- 16 chariots and 108 infantry.Pics when they arrive.
What could be better than pyramids , deserts and the exotic sights, sounds and smells of the Orient to warm one after struggling home through the rain and chill?
Now for some research for illustrations of Cesarian Rome infantry-

A couple of Roman Generals- ideal inspiration for my version of mark Anthony. I am trying to resist depicting him in a lion pulled chariot.
Now Cleopatra and the Egyptian army-
I start January therefore with the following 4 armies ready for Guyleria-
Vendhyans replete with three war mammoths, chariot and rockets (note white smoke trail in top photo)
Keltoi with light cavalry, infantry and loads of slingers with the option of painting some chariots sometime when
Medievals with bowmen, crossbowmen.knights on foot, some dodgy levy and the ducal warchest (see front of first & second photo) to be guarded on the battlefield at all cost...
Roman type chaps - currently using my dbm based figures but hope to add some Garrison instead to the fray.
There are some Emesan/Edessan type city states troops to paint and who know what else will take my fancy...
I think I am pretty well set up for some games ahead with the "Gathering of Hosts" rules.tradgardmastarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13116967655904601740noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826864839818785057.post-54085472267435556342015-01-01T06:01:00.001-08:002015-01-01T06:01:27.844-08:00Mammoth New YearIn Guyleria the Vendhyan army has taken the field to oppose some Keltoi raiders-
A flying nymph's eye view of the defenders. Good fun was had but time intervened and I needed to dismantle the game.My verdict- great fun and I am quite pleased with the look of the set up too.A few barbarian chariots to do sometime, not to mention the built up area.It was good to model and game this weekend.tradgardmastarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13116967655904601740noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826864839818785057.post-48309526796460088092014-11-22T22:38:00.002-08:002014-11-22T22:38:29.754-08:00I felt like posting this...In the rare moments of energy/time currently I had been thinking about getting wood for a gridded baseboard. However I found my 12 x 11 felt gridded cloth and was convinced of its storage and other advantages. Yesterday in John Lewis I bought some small squares of felt. When I got home I covered foam rubber in the aforementioned felt and made hills.I am delighted with the light-weight ,pleasing hills I have made.
I have been re-reading a page or two a night of Joseph Morschauser III's excellent 1962 book on wargaming of late.I have been looking particularly at his gridded games and his scenery. I'm back here. Anyway I couldn't sleep so I got up and painted some ancients (slingers, barbarians) whilst listening to Radio 4 and drinking coffee until the sun rose. So here is-

what to look for in autumn with regard to my ancient gaming etc. Firstly over the summer I tried Neil Thomas's rules out and had a few good solo games

However all things considered I am moving forward with Ross's "Gathering of Hosts" in a gridded ,square based game. They meet my solo needs and are fun whilst giving a realistic result. Secondly I want to make up some map ( Hyboria is always lurking around my mind somewhere) for the different armies I have/am working on.At the moment they are as follows- a Roman type empire, Celtic/Galatian barbarians, elephant equipped Indians and some desert/middle eastern city states.Personalities will be created and worked upon as we go along to add seasoning and flavour to the gaming. The barbarians are ready and the Romans too. I am working on the elephants now.The emphasis is fun, easy pick up and put away gaming with a semi historical feel- history through the lens of Ladybird books,Heros the Spartan,Rosemary Sutcliff and Hyboria for example. Nations will be vaguely from the same historical period/locale. I can't quite bring myself to field medieval knights against chariots though absolutely no offence to those who can, it's just not where I am at present.I intend to post my ancient gaming here from now on.Hopefully the first game later today...
p.s if anyone has any unwanted "old school" ancients let me know,thanks...tradgardmastarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13116967655904601740noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826864839818785057.post-62178391672931227762013-11-24T06:51:00.003-08:002013-11-24T07:21:07.558-08:00Another Heliopolis...Known as "That other Heliopolis" Heliopolis is a rather run down City on the edge of the desert sitting astride trade routes to the East... ruled over by a Priest King of the Sun ,riven by guild disputes, home to the fabled stone that fell from the heavens and most definitely a place to avoid at all costs...infamy came when (bored beyond belief) he declared himself a God ."
In preparation for the forthcoming games/campaign I have ruled 60mm squares onto my wargaming mat. I have chosen this size as I already have dbm/dba based troops which are on a 60mm frontage. In this photo I have used two infantry or one cavalry to make a unit in one square. I quite like the look...
In this one I have only used one base per square to form a unit.Looks a little less pleasing than the previous picture. The jury is out as far as I am concerned...
I think I might try 60mm square or 60mm by 40mm for cavalry and infantry ( varying the number of figures on a base depending on if skirmishers or close order infantry) when I raise more troops. I will, however definitely not rebase the dbm/dba stuff- it would be a waste of time and energy and allows me to use the figures against my regular opponent's ancient armies.
Finally some of my books which influenced me greatly in my teens-
Two stalwarts still on the bookshelves. The one on the left has been superseded by other editions but I kept this one for nostalgic reasons. The one on the right has some dodgy reconstructions of ancient warriors but is still useful.tradgardmastarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13116967655904601740noreply@blogger.com3
